Conference Schedule

Philosophy Education in Multicultural New Zealand

The 2012 NZAPT conference will primarily be exploring the role of Philosophy education in the cross-cultural exchange of ideas:

· We will be visiting the Confucius Institute at the University of Canterbury to learn more about the Analects of Confucius and how his Philosophy has influenced the thoughts and lives of Chinese and Asian people.

· Philip Catton from the University of Canterbury will be presenting his recent paper Philosophy, Matauranga Maori, and the Meaning of NZ Biculturalism

· Paul Janman, a documentary film maker from Auckland will be speaking about his recent film project The Tongan Ark (2012), before a special screening in the Rangi Ruru theatre. The documentary explores Greek philosophy, Tongan politics and education theory within the context of the Atenisi Institute – a Tongan school/university based on the teachings of ancient Greek Philosophers.

· Plus, we will be learning about what other NZ schools are doing with Philosophy, strategizing ways of introducing Philosophy into more NZ schools and reviewing assessment practice in Philosophy
