Enlightenment thinking promoted the idea that the State’s first responsibility is to aid in the development of the reasoning powers of individual citizens. Enlightenment thinkers also cultivated the connection between reason and respect (for others and ourselves).

The 2016 NZ Association for Philosophy Teachers (NZAPT) conference will examine different approaches to thinking and reasoning together. Practitioners will share a variety of ways teachers can reason and philosophise with students. The conference will provide opportunities to learn about the various cultures of learning in Philosophy classrooms around the country. There will also be critical discussion of the nature and future of Philosophy education in New Zealand.
